HerdFriend in my Concise Oxford Dictionary was defined as one joined to another in intimacy and mutual benevolence independently of sexual or family love. It said the term was also used to describe one's second in a duel. And lawyers in court called each other my learned friend. As well, a friend was one who is not an enemy, who is on the same side. That was pretty broad. © 1993, 1999. |
